The Xindi are actually a coalition of five different species that all attained sentience at essentially the same time on the planet Xindi Prime. These six species are denoted by their phyiscal appearance: Primate, Reptilian, Insectoid, Sloth, and Aquatic. There was a sixth intelligent species native to their homeworld, the Xindi-Avians, but they were destroyed during the wars that led to the ultimate destruction of that planet.
In the aftermath of the war, the remaining Xindi banded together for survival. A council was formed wherein each species of Xindi held equal voice. Together they began to weld together an uneasy alliance of the previously hostile peoples.
The perceived threat posed by the planet Earth led the Xindi to begin building a planetkiller weapon.
