Experimentation with the new plasma mine technologies in the early 1990's gave way to the creation of a class of Jaga Medium Fighters armed with launch mechanisms for four light plasma mines. These light munitions had extended range compared to other fighter-based ballistic weapons and the advantage of scoring plasma damage on the target. The refit required the scaling back of the ship's engine, reducing overall thrust.
The fighters were at first prized for their added flexibility, but the lack of speed and responsiveness ended up reducing the fighter's popularity and limiting deployment in the fleet.
