The ak-Tai are an avian race that dominated the outward sectors from the end of the Great War to their loss against the Circasian Empire in the War of the Seven Stars.
The ak-Tai specialized in meson weapons, taking particles weapons to their limits. The ak-Tai are capable of bypassing much of a ship's armor with these weapons, but the ability does not come without its disadvantages.
