The Tolavim Light Cruiser was one of many design projects already under development when the Solassi were contacted by the Ukal. The Solassi were wary of the outsiders and set out to accelerate development of their defense projects in order help bolster the lines of defense around Solassi. The Tolavim Light Cruiser saw several minor modifications before finally being authorized for construction.
The Tolavim Light Cruiser was never a match for the ships of the Ukal Combine but they did help to ease the minds of the Solassi’s concerned leadership. The Tolavim was two-thirds the size of their largest warship of the period and well armed for its mass. The multipurpose nature of the Tolavim allowed it to operate in numerous roles within the fleet, but most Tolavim Light Cruisers typically acted as consorts of the larger Solassi heavy cruisers in larger task forces.
By 1684 the Tolavim Light Cruiser was beginning to show its age. The ship had a severe vulnerability to fighters, forcing the Tolavim into a support role. The cruisers could no longer perform short-range patrols or other solo missions for fear that enemy fighter groups would descend upon them and rip them to pieces.
The class was upgraded in 1690 to take advantage of the new sentinel point defense system. This new interceptor system replaced the ship’s existing light laser turrets. These new mounts had wide arcs of firing, allowing the point defense excellent fleet defense coverage. With the new point defense systems installed the Tolavim became even more entrenched in its defense role.
The final upgrade to the Tolavim saw the installation of a third point defense system on the forward section of the craft. This final upgrade was made along with a general service upgrade meant to extend the service life of the Tolavim Light Cruiser another ten years.
When the ten-year reprieve expired the Tolavims were converted into various auxiliary craft or else mothballed for future use. Some of these ships were reactivated during the Solassi’s war with the Ghotekhen, though they faired poorly against their modern opponents. The Solassi learned from this lesson and the remaining models were all either converted to auxiliary variants or scrapped.
